Review by George Norman (Cybersecurity Editor)

on 22 Dec 2016

Ransomware may not be something new, but it is the year’s fastest growing cyber threat. That’s why the cybersecurity experts at Cybereason came up with RansomFree, a free tool that protects Windows computers against ransomware. What it does is it constantly monitors your system for behavior typically exhibited by ransomware and alerts you when it detects anything suspicious.

RansomFree is meant for PCs that run Windows 7, 8, and 10. To get it up and running on a PC that runs Windows 7, 8 or 10, you need to complete a standard installation procedure: download an installer, run it, follow the onscreen instructions. Shouldn’t take long to complete the whole thing.

This is the part of the review where I have to tell you a few things about the interface. The thing is that RansomFree doesn’t have an interface. Double clicking RansomFree’s tray icon won’t bring up an actual interface, it will bring up the About menu, which features a bit of information on Cybereason, briefly explains why ransomware is bad, and very briefly explains how RansomFree works. Speaking about that, you can see RansomFree in action in this demo video.

According to the developer, RansomFree will stop 99% of ransomware, including never-before-seen types. "By targeting the common behavior of ransomware, Cybereason RansomFree protects against 99 percent of ransomware strains," explained Cybereason’s Lital Asher-Dotan. "RansomFree detects ransomware, suspends the activity, displays a popup that warns users that their files are at risk and lets the user stop the attack with one click."

As mentioned several times before and, as highlighted by the name itself, RansomFree is free software.

Cybereason’s RansomFree will stop 99% of ransomware. Go get this free tool and protect your PC against ransomware, one of the fastest growing security threats right now.

Pros

RansomFree works with Windows 7, 8 and 10; installing it takes little time and effort. RansomFree silently runs in the background and watches for behavior typically exhibited by ransomware. According to Cybereason, RansomFree can stop 99% of ransomware. RansomFree is free software.

Cons

There’s no actual interface and there are no settings to play with.
